For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but simply to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.

COLOPHON

Code

This site utilizes HTML5 in conjunction with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to position and manipulate web page elements and objects. A best attempt to use W3C standards to build this site was used. However, portions of this site are dynamically-built from data and scripts where it is difficult to ensure validation. The templates which structure the site are valid HTML5 using both CSS2 and CSS3. The great Modernizr script is used to help take advantage of the new HTML5/CSS3 options while delivering a consistent experience with older browsers. Where applicable and appropriate fallbacks have been included to optimise browser compatibility.

Content Management is handled through the brilliant and easy to use (yet powerful) Perch CMS.

Typography

The primary font family specified is the beautifully crafted Ubuntu family and is delivered through CSS @font-face rules. The Ubuntu Font Family is a set of matching new libre/open fonts in development during 2010-2011. The development is being funded by Canonical Ltd on behalf of the wider Free Software community and the Ubuntu project. The technical font design work and implementation has been undertaken by Dalton Maag. Both the final font Truetype/OpenType files and the design files used to produce the font family are distributed under an open licence and you are expressly encouraged to experiment, modify, share and improve. For more information and type use oppotunities on the web, visit Google Web Fonts for a taster.

Production

Made with Macbook Pro running OS X and Windows XP.

Software

The HTML templates are initially coded with Notepad++ and TextWrangler then tested within Dreamweaver. Pages are rendered through the Perch CMS and have been tested within all major browsers. Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks are used to prepare all raster graphics and photographs. Vector artwork has been produced in Illustrator, CorelDraw, Inkscape and Acrobat Pro.

Photography

Photographers whose work appear throughout the site include: John Sherlock, Bruce Law, Giles Runeckles, Welbert Choi, along with some stock images (used sparingly). Additional images have been supplied by both Tourism Vancouver and Tourism Whistler.

Other Bits & Bobs

Additional Interactivity is generated through the use of the Jquery plugin framework and fallbacks are provided where needed. IE conditional comments have been used (sparingly) to offer CSS conformity and consistent page rendering where needed.
